Manayunk to Mt Laurel commute (Philadelphia, Girard: neighborhood, theater, college)

Hey guys,

Going to be relocating for work in a little, job is in Mt Laurel, and was trying to figure out where I want to live in the city. I heard Northern Liberties, Fairmount, and Manayunk are all solid spots for a recent college graduate to continue having a social life. My main question is how bad will the commute be if I live in Manayunk to work in NJ? I plan on having a car. Just from looking at a map it seems as though I would hit inbound traffic as well as leaving the city traffic, whereas a spot in Fairmount would only get hit by the outbound? I've only been to Philadelphia a few times (NYC guy), but I'm eager to learn more.

Fishtown would be a better option. You can hop right on 95 north to the Betsy Ross Bridge.

If you are leaving Manayunk during rush hour it can take 20-30 minutes just to get out of the neighborhood onto 76 deoending where you are. Larry Bowa's got it, I would stick to something closer to Center City.

As others suggested, Northern Liberties or Fishtown are your best bet. Take 95 North right to the Betsy Ross Bridge.

By all means avoid Manayunk. That will be an hour commute on many days I suspect.

Alternatively, you may want to consider Collingswood, NJ and commute into the city via PATCO on weeknights or weekends. Aside from the small strip of bars near Frankford and Girard, you'll find that Fishtown is very residential. Keep in mind that Philadelphia has a 4% wage tax that you pay for living in the city limits. It's a lot of coin if you're making a good salary.

I second Collingswood.. Especially since you will be working in Mt. Laurel

No place to get a drink in Collingswood. Property Taxes are also high.

I made the commute to NJ from Fishtown using this route for a few years, I'd also recommend it.

Frankford & Girard has a concentration of bars, but there's a lot more going on in Fishtown than that intersection. Memphis Taproom, Cedar Point, Loco Pez, Pizza Brain, Little Baby's, Whipped Bakeshop, Mugshot Diner, Ida Mae's, Interstate Drafthouse, Pickled Heron. Plus a bunch of neighborhood bars.

Why would a young, single person looking to have a good time want to live in Collingswood?

Plus, Penn Treaty Park, the Walking Fish Theater, Sugarhouse Casino and Northern Liberties are right there.
