I did a google search for such stores in philly or in the area and most of what I'm finding is for cell phones or DVDs. Can anybody recommend a store that buys used home stereo pieces. Mainly a receiver and speakers.

Easiest to sell them on CL. You can try Barracks (if they are still around) but don't expect to get much.

If it's a specific older equipments that are worth some money, try brand enthusiasts forums.

I used to be on the Polk and AudioKarma forums and purchased/sold different brand equipments when I was into the home audio stuff. The catch is most of these forums don't allow new members to just join and sell stuff.

Are the components high-end (or, we're they high-end or notable in their hayday)? If so then a few of the small hifi places sprinkled across the suburbs will buy them, Surround Sounds in Exton being one of them. But don't expect to get much. Hifi stores sell used gear at a low margin to get customers in the door and eyeing, trying, and buying the other missing components at MSRP.

Otherwise you'll have better luck with Craigslist or maybe one of the specialty forums like sj mentioned. Shipping receivers or speakers at UPS/FedEx consumer prices is almost never worthwhile.

If your kit includes a decent turntable then a lot of the indie record stores will be interested.

If they're in great shape, try Hideaway Records in Chestnut Hill.
