Hello everyone,

My friend and I are currently graduate students in Chicago and we are planning to relocate to Philadelphia sometime this summer. We have been doing some research on different neighborhoods, but wanted to get some feedback and insight from people living in Philadelphia.

How is Norris Square and Fishtown? These are two neighborhoods that we have heard about and we are very interested.

Also, we would like to live in an area that's culturally diverse, not just Black and White, but where there are also Hispanics. Any areas that you guys recommend?

Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Both neighborhoods are good examples of the type of diversity you're looking for, especially Norris Square. They're both in transition, so if you visit, expect to see a lot of blight intertwined with renewal projects and new construction. Good picks.

Default Fishtown and diversity...??

I actually live in Fishtown, moved here four years ago, and can tell you it's far from diverse. It's probably 90% White, 90% Irish Catholic and 90% working class. The upside is it's very quiet at night for an urban neighborhood and pretty safe in terms of crime. If you really want diversity, look at Kensington, which is just west of Fishtown. It's a pretty even mix of white, black and hispanic. Crime is a problem and finding suitable housing can be difficult. Otherwise you might consider West Mt Airy in Northwest Philadelphia. It's very diverse and is in a better situation in terms of public safety
