Hi - I'm new to the forum and new to Philly! Just got a place on 45th and Chester and while I love the area (Clark Park!), the abundance of transit options, and the proximity to Penn, I am a little concerned about safety and would really appreciate hearing input from locals about how safe they feel the area is and what areas to avoid.

Just read about a shooting that happened earlier this week just a block or two away...
Police: Robbery and shooting at 46th and Springfield not random | West Philly Local

Here's the wording from the article if the link doesn't work for you.

"We received emails from readers asking about the shooting/robbery that happened on Sunday, Aug 18, shortly before 4 p.m. near 46th and Springfield. The victim, a male, was shot in the shoulder during a robbery and was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition, but is doing better now. The suspect fled the scene on foot, according to police reports.
The robbery was not random and the victim and the shooter may know each other, according to police. “There is not a maniacal serial robber out there robbing and shooting random people,” Joe Murray of the Southwest Police Detectives said in an email. No more details are available at this time as the investigation continues. "

Yeah, there's still someone out there that committed a serious crime. I think the suspect might stay out of the light for a while, but I would watch myself for a couple of days if I lived around there.

Btw: There's a crime thread that's where you're supposed to post stuff like this! Not a mod, just trying to help.

By city standards, that area is fine but it's always good to be aware of one's surroundings. I'd start to become more concerned upon going west of 49th and and Chester but I would not worry about being accosted daily.

From living in this neighborhood for over a decade now I will say that the very safest parts of University City are around 36th to 43rd Locust to Chester. 45th is fine, but once you start heading west and southwest of Clark Park there is a slight increase in crime, just as it gets sketchier around Walnut to Market Streets from 44th west and north.

That's why I made sure I stayed in between spruce and Chestnut from 44th to 40th street. I didn't want any parts of the trolley area route.........Baltimore, Chester Ave

Many of the nicest blocks are south and west of your boundaries.

Yes

The entire area between 44th to 48th and from Spruce to Baltimore. There are also lovely blocks below Baltimore, but I'm a bit less familiar. All of this would be out of your boundary.

I agree; in two separate stints in UC, I lived within walking distance of Clark Park. (The landmark, that is; I've never met our forum member. ) WPD75: if you've never visited this part of UC, you've missed out on a lot.
