An organization known as University City District (UCD) recently revealed that over 1 billion dollars in construction is going on or will commence shortly in the district.

Major projects include the implementation of Drexel University's 2012-2018 master plan. They include the Chestnut Square construction site, now nearing completion that includes one 19 story dorm building and two eight story buildings. Also nearing completion is the new Lebow Law School at 32nd St. and Market which is a limestone clad 12 story building.

Other projects include:

-- 3601 Market Street, a 27 story 364 unit apartment building.
-- a 25 story apartment building next to the Episcopal Cathedral at 38th and Chestnut
-- an 11 story office building at 3737 Market St.

Plans and zoning variances are in the works for Cira Center II and a new 10 story mixed apartment building with retail spaces at 4224 Baltimore Ave.

If one neighborhood in Philadelphia can be described as "booming" it is University City.

Good news! I love seeing UC develop. I'm hoping for more infill between center city and UC so they can truely merge into one large urban core, each with distinct identities of course.

Also, the Chestnut Street Cira tower--called The Grove--is currently under construction. Now above street level, this is perhaps the biggest and most visually important project of the group as it will have a very visible presence on the skyline...

I agree. When I first moved here in the early 90's one of peoples' criticisms was that the "city" part of Philadelphia - or urban core - was so small, consisting of the area near City Hall and not much more. It's getting to the point that University City is becoming almost a sub-downtown. Effectively, our active, vital urban core has doubled since I moved here. (If other areas are included, you could make an argument that it's more than tripled).

Drexel's campus is FINALLY starting to look almost impressive. The newer buildings look great.
