Looks like no area was without a murder in the city. Even the far NE which I thought was the best area.

The far more interesting data is the incredible decline in homicides in 2013. The city is at a 40 - 45 year low in the number of homicides YTD. Collectively violent and property crime have seen decent declines from last year as well. Hopefully it's a sustainable trend.

There's been a remarkable drop in murders and violent crimes nationwide this year - not just in Philly.

I know. However the city been a bit of an outlier over the past deacde or so when it comes to the general trend of declining rates of homicide in large cities. Other large cities have had more rapid rates of decline than Philly has and those cities have been able to maintain the lower per capita rates. I'm hoping the city can achive similar results.

I share your hope. The fact that the downward trend this year is being reflected in Philly is a promising sign, I think.

It is a good sign, for sure. Yet still, the city carries a stigma as to its violence. Things can change, but the city has to work to help make that happen. That is what is taking place here.

Year to date and year end totals

Last year at this time there were 254 homicides; this year there are 176. Or in other words, 31% less this year so far. That's pretty good!
