Hi,

We are a South Asian family with two school going kids. My spouse will be working in UPenn and we would prefer to live in a suburb in a good school district. We are looking to buy a house in the 400K range in a good public school district, preferably with some Asian population. After some initial research, we have zeroed in on the Man line area and Media, but are open to suggestions about other neighborhoods as well (of course close to work). Furthermore, suggestions about any specific neighborhood in the Main line area will be appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance!

The Main Line has a bigger (though not especially large) Asian population, but your budget is far more Media-friendly. FWIW I don't think you'd experience any issues for being Asian/Indian in either place.

Have you thought about Cherry Hill? Not terribly far from Penn and lots of Indians.

There are also Asian populations in Cheltenham Township (Elkins Park, Melrose Park), Whitpain Township (Blue Bell), and the Lansdale area. All are connected to Center City via 1 or more SEPTA trains, but Lansdale is further out.

That's true too, though as far as desirable PA suburbs go, Asian Indians are most concentrated in the Lansdale Area. Cheltenham/Blue Bell are more East Asian (especially Korean). Otherwise, they're pretty scattered.

OP: any particular %age threshold you're looking to surpass?

You might also want to consider the Marple-Newtown School District. The Newtown Square area has some truly beautiful neighborhoods; the district is revamping their schools and have a decent Asian population for the suburbs. For Penn, you could jump on the Blue Route to 95, and it'll take you there easily. Best of luck!

IIRC, Marple-Newtown is mostly Korean/East Asian.

Thank you so much for your inputs. No, Heavenwood, we are not that keen to go to neighborhoods with a heavy concentration of Indians. Our kids go to a school that has a healthy mixture of all the races and we would like to continue with that. But, yes, we would like to have some Asian population at least, so that they know who they are. Thanks for the Lansdale input - we did not know about it. It is now in our consideration list. However, the transit time is around one and half hours from Lansdale to UPenn adding time for transit from home to station, which could be a challenge.

Heavy is a very relative term. This isn't California or Central/North Jersey, so the highest you're going to get in a given place is 10-15% (Millbourne is an exception, but it's a Borough with a population of 1,000 in a less well-regarded school district).

I just wanted to know what "some Asian population" means to you so we can help narrow down a list of potential places for you.

For example, Cherry Hill, which is considered one of the more "Indian" places around here, is only 2.6% (1,861).

There's really no such thing on the Main Line. Nearby King of Prussia has a pretty substantial population, however.
