In Jersey, Red Bank battlefield in National Park offers a great view of South Philly and you can a lot of planes heading for the airport. There are probably good places on the PA side of the river too.

Default Fort Miflin

Go to Fort Mifflin National Historical Park south of the airport. There is a small fee I think but it is an interesting (and haunted) historical fort... And when you are walking around the planes come right. over. your. head Heck, you could just park in the parking lot for that matter. Have fun!

There's a circuitous road that loops all the way around the airport, serving as an access road for UPS, the small cargo companies, hangars, etc. There are plenty of places to pull over for a bit and watch all the air traffic. When you have a kid in tow, security won't give you too much hassle.

yeah, I was wondering...can you do stuff like this in the post sept 11th world? I know I used to do stuff like this in the 80's, but seems like security and government types would be uptight about stuff like this

It happens every weekend. No doubt, there are going to be cameras on you, and you might get a visit by a dude in a security van. If you look suspicious (taking lots of photos, writing stuff down), you're going to be noted. But an everyday dad taking his kid to watch planes for a half hour? No big deal.

Your child might enjoy seeing some smaller planes take off/land, my boys do. There's an airport in Lumberton NJ South Jersey Regional Airport | KVAY There is also an air museum there Air Victory Museum - The Official Site (call ahead about hours) and a snack bar.

Also, in the summer, the Flying W in Medford NJ is fun as they have a pool club (you can get a day pass) and you can swim and watch planes Flying W Airport
