No Regional Rail commute into downtown Philly is necessarily "too long" although I would understand some Delaware residents at the end of the Wilmington/Newark line getting a little weary of it.

Public transit is generally viewed and planned differently here than in LA. You'd be far from alone commuting from Wayne.

I've been working and commuting into the city for almost 20 years. It's not that bad. I've commuted from West, North and East of the city (as far as York County) daily and it's not all that bad. The most important thing is knowing where you will be commuting into. For example, if I work in West Philly, I would not be communting from NJ. Try to avoid going across the city if possible.

I commute into center city from Gilbertsville/Limerick for work daily. The commute is maddening (40 mi. ea. way, 1.5-2 hrs each way), all mostly due to 422. It's the absolute worst, I don't know why they don't create a 3rd lane EB/WB for HOV or something to ease things up. Driving to Septa then taking the train in takes the same amount of time. If anyone's considering commuting from anywhere west of Oaks, I'd recommend against it. All that you save w/housing you'll lose with complete frustration & mpg as you sit there on 422 everyday wondering why there's all that grass in the median.

I think it's a quality of life at home vs commute issue. Right now we are looking to buy a house but value for money houses are around 20 miles from work. It's a balance.
