A little background: I'm in my mid-20s and I'm currently living in south Jersey (Collingswood area) with my girlfriend. I'm working in Conshy at the moment but I'll be working in my company's new Philly office sometime in February. I grew up in Bucks County and lived in south Philly for about two years while I was going to school.

My current lease is up May 1st and I'm toying with the idea of moving back to PA and buying a house. Nothing is set in stone, but I am doing some casual research. Part of this research entails finding a good area to call home. I don't have a lot of experience outside of the city proper (which is where I don't really want to live) so I'm looking for some guidance. I'll be working in CC and my girlfriend works in North Philly.

I've been seeing some decent homes in the Tacony/Frankford/Torresdale/Holmesburg region, but I don't really have any concept of what the areas themselves are like. Anyone have any information about crime/shopping/etc.? For what it's worth, I don't want to live in an outright bad area, but if it's a little rough around the edges (but generally safe) we'd be okay.

Appreciate any and all advice people have. Also open to other suggestions in Montco or Delco if there's something worth looking at, but I'm thinking Delco might be a little too far of a commute.

Thanks in advance!

Northeast Philly is nice. A few of my coworkers live there. The far northeast. Also I have a friend who lives in the Northwest (Manayunk area) she lives in a great neighborhood and loves it. Shes been there for about 15 years now. I am a renter but if in the future I did decide to buy those are the two areas in Philadelphia, I would consider first.
