It's not my preference, but despite the purist foodie protest in this thread, it's actually not that freakishly unusual to get mayo on a cheesesteak in Philly.

I wouldn't even put steak sauce on a cheesesteak, let alone mayo.

I don't live anywhere near PA or the northeast states but I do put mayonnaise on my Philly sandwich. I apologize, I understand the purist up there gasping at outsiders like me messing up your traditions.

You can do whatever you want with a "Philly sandwich." I'm not exactly sure what that is.

Sidenote: I don't particularly like cheesesteaks, think they're vastly overrated and I'm really sick and tired of it being one of the top five things outsiders associate with Philly when there are a billion things better than cheesesteaks here. None the less the idea of someone putting mayo on a cheesesteak still disturbs me somewhere deep within my Philadelphian core.

Correct-A Cheesesteak hoagie has lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo. They can be pretty good but I've honestly only gotten it once or twice.

And yes I agree with Kidphilly-Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteaks can be AMAZING.

Yes it is. In fact I prefer mayo on a cheesesteak instead of catsup.

if you have to put either mayo or ketchup on a cheesesteak, it's not a very good cheesesteak

When I go to the papi store up the street from me, he always guesses at what I want to get: Mayo, cheese, ketchup, and fried onions. Mind you this is a place frequented by native Philadelphians...Yes, of course mayo is acceptable and I automatically know if someone is not from here or they live in Center City and only eat there if they don't say what I listed (minus the onions & cheese). Ugh, ESPECIALLY when I hear "whiz".
