I'm curious, if subways don't run past midnight and seem to have a bad reputation, how does one have a night out in Old City and return to University City? Does everyone just take a cab?

Cabs, and Buses

I've rode the bus at 2 o'clock in the morning before...several times, and I've never had any bad experiences. Except for what I said. One of the main problems I could see would be fighting.

I said the subway, not the bus.

Here's the reason why the subway should not go on past midnight:

That is not true. First this would only be on weekend nights, which I agree with. It would not be necessary Sunday-Wednesday... Next, I take the Market/Frankford line from 34th to City Hall almost every friday/saturday night between 10-12pm when going to the bars and clubs in Center City from Drexel and it is consistently crowded with a good mix of people even in the middle of winter. I have never felt in danger or uncomfortable. Yes, situations can happen, but that is rare, and Center City is filled with a ton of great nightlife, so yes I think it is an excellent idea for the subways to have extended weekend service, it is adding to the growth of Center City and surrounding.

Why do you catch the subway when the 21 bus or 42 will take you right to center city? Also the 31 would do the same

The subway is faster that's why. Not everyone feels like waiting an hour to catch the bus even if it's late at night.

That may be true but I do appreciate having the option of being able to catch the subway with 24 hour service like New Yorkers do.
