I need advice. My family and I live in a converted ranch house. There is a 1 bedroom apartment on the top level and on the bottom level (basement) there is a living room, kitchen, 1/2 bath, and storage area. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms and a full bath. Years ago the storage area was considered a common area and eventually became part of our unit. (that happened before we moved in) Now we have a new home own (landlord) who lived here when the storage area was a common area and he is taking that space from us. This causes several issue due to the fact we have 2 young girls. The lease we had the first year stated that the area in question was part of our unit how ever after the first year the lease was never renewed. My question is can he come in and make these changes?

I think we would need more details on the original lease. Some types of leases stay in effect, full force, unless they are actively cancelled by giving proper and legal notice. You need to read your original lease for language to this effect.
