So long story short, before I started my contract in Silicon Valley, I also had an offer from Philly. I took Silicon Valley instead, as it was a big name tech company in the area. Anyway, I was told earlier this month that my contract will nr ending at the end of this month, and I started looking for work. my oriental contact from Philly found me on Skype and asked me if I was still interested in the Philadelphia opportunity. I said I was, and he arranged another talk with the hiring manager in Philly. I believe there is a 70% chance that the hiring manager will bring me on board.

Anyway, I have a few concerns. some may be irrational, so I apologize in advance. I'm a black American. I've been to NY, Seattle, DC, California, and Atlanta, all on paper are less segregated than Philly. I want to stay in Center City, close to the job. I prefer to sublet. Are there many blacks in Center City, and would finding a place there be challenging?

Since I dont know the city, I would prefer to live somewhere close to where I work. Preferably walking distance. I could go for an apartment, but I want to do month to month subletting, just to see how solid the contract is.

If I get this job, I'm looking for a comfortable salary, well over 6 figures. And since Philly is much less expensive than the Bay, I can pay. I also do not know where I'm going, and don't know the hot spots. So I prefer to be very close, because I do not know the high crime areas. Also, is Center City safe?

Thanks for advance in answering some of my questions.

I don't agree those cities are any less segregated than Philly. You do realize San Francisco is like 3% African American right? And Seattle is not much better.

Think you would be fine

Most areas around Center City are fine

Philly has some ghetto areas and are bad but not in CC itself. Center City today is becoming more mixed - still more white, second asians, then others but think for the most part there is no racial issue in living there - its more an economic means area than segregated by race (not always that simple). But personally think if you have a common interest no issues IMHO

Best of luck in making your decision and pursuits

I agree that the ethnicity of your local contact wasn't so relevant although I can understand pointing out your own.

The neighborhoods of Center City - and many communities surrounding it - are fine. Of course, it's "the city" so stuff happens. But it appears from your previous experience that you have acquired enough street wisdom to generally avoid a bad situation.

As already said, race/ethnicity isn't so much of an issue of in Center City as (perceived) economic class. There's a chance that some people may make incorrect assumptions if you are not dressed in a collared shirt and tie. But "95%" of the time, you should be fine.

It's quite integrated especially in the professional scene and nicer neighborhoods. If you have already lived in NY then nothing is going to surprise you here, center city is an urban paradise.

I'm thinking that the OP meant original and not oriental. That auto-correct makes funny suggestions sometimes. Changed the sentence to "original" and it makes more sense.

I think I read a statistic that said Center City has 40,000+ white people, and 2,000+ black people. So, I would say that there is a black population there, but not as big as the white one.

As for safety, it's the safest area in the city and the only crime that happens there is theft, and 9 times out of 10 it is from a retail store. The surroding neighborhoods are are pretty good too. But if I was trying to stay safe I would stay below Fairmount Ave.

Awesome. I think you guys curbed some of my fears of moving to Philly. I have a Skype Interview on Friday with my contact from Philly, so wish me luck. Keeping my fingers crossed.
