I am thinking about whether to get an apartment at 7th and Girard. How bad is it around there? I am a tall and fairly big white guy. I sometimes go out and would want to be able to come back late at night. How safe is it to walk down Girard in the middle of the night, passed those desolate gas stations and that sleazy Melrose bar? Anyone have experience living there? Thanks.

According to what my friends say about that area, it's pretty safe. The only crime that goes around there is muggings and thefts. But if you use your street smarts that shouldn't be a problem. Just try not to walk home alone with earphones in and your iPhone out while playing Angry Birds...

A young guy was murdered on Girard near 8th in December. It can be pretty funky, pay attention to who's around you when the sun's in.

I would definitely say 7th and Girard is where it starts to turn sketch. The area is pretty much surrounded by projects once you hit the train tracks. Then I would say Girard gets better again once you hit Broad Street. It's really that short stretch between say 6th and Broad that's sketchy.

construction has reached 6th st so I'd say this qualifies as "fringe"

No. Mostly life long residents, renters who can't afford Center City and professionals slumming it looking to some day make a profit on their "investment."

wow, back in the early 90's (when I went to Bodine on 4th and George) we used to play football on a field in the area that belonged to a high rise project next to it (i think).
