Hi,

I'll be coming to Philadelphia to do research at the NARA archive at 900 Market Street in downtown Philadelphia. I see that there's a parking garage at 820 Market Street, but I need some advice.

Will my car be safe there? Is there a lot of crime in that area? I'll have all my earthly possessions in the trunk while I do research at the facility.

Are the parking garages in Philadelphia monitored?

And is downtown area generally safe for a single female?

Thanks.

820 Market street? Are you referring to the outside parking lot? I don't think there is a garage on Market street at that block. In any case, that's a safe area.

There are a few indoor garages around that area (some own by the city).

As sj08054 says, that is an outdoor surface lot, and although it is a safe area, I would not feel comfortable leaving "all my earthly possessions" there. If everything is in the trunk, then it would not be as problematic, but wherever you park, don't leave anything exposed in the car. Here is a website that gives you all the parking options. Philadelphia Parking Finder | BestParking

The garage on 9th St off Chestnut is across from Thomas Jefferson Hospital and will probably have the best security, and is just around the corner from the entrance to the Archives.

That area is safe and I wouldn't normally think twice about leaving a car in that lot. However I also don't normally carry around all of my earthly possessions in my trunk. The garage at Jefferson that Bookmen mentioned sounds like a much better idea. Also the parking lots for the national park nearby must have decent enough security. I imagine lots of tourists carry a lot of luggage and I've never heard of any cars being broken into. They are probably fairly secure to deter that.

You would think but at the Independence Visitor garage, the first sign you see is not to leave valuables in the car. There are cameras inside the garage but I wouldn't consider it safer than the outside lot in question. There are just easy access into the garage thought it has gotten a lot better, it's a garage where homeless hang out.

the NARA downtown is closing or already closed. Announced last month. Did you call them and make sure they are open and have the materials you need? The only NARA in the future will be located in the Far Northeast. There is a bus but its pretty brutal trip for anyone who does not have access to a car.

Thanks so much for the fast replies!!

Yes, the day after I posted this thread, I learned that I'll be going to Northeast Philly to do my research. Frankly, I find that *far* better than downtown Philly. I'm a little nervous in big cities, and I get lost so easily.

Plus, the new NARA is pretty isolated, which will make it easier for a traveler like me. They have a gated and guarded parking area.

Thanks again for the responses.

Rosemary
