they did. trolley cars came later and ended sooner. most of chestnut hill was actually a railroad real estate venture. originally they had planned on running train to reading in that direction. that obviously never panned out so they made lemonade out of a lemon and created an affluence suburb. the chestnut hill academy building used to be a hotel. streetcar suburbs generally refer to suburbs that spouted up around streetcars rather than ones that came to have them later. streetcars came after railroads so streetcar suburbs are newer. chestnut hill is probably a bit of both though today it has two railroad lines and no streetcars. right from the start in 1884 the PRR offered timed transfers to NY bound trains at north philadelphia station. there's some useless information for the day

They did. The 23 was trolley service until 1992. However, trains preceded trolleys to Chestnut Hill. The Chestnut Hill East Line began operation in 1854. There was trolley service between Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy in the late 19th century but there wasn't a one-seat trolley ride from Chestnut Hill to Center City until 1913 when multiple lines were merged and Route 23 was established.

in my experience torresdale ave is somewhat typical of what a streetcar suburb commercial district looks like...not mixed use. you were expected to take the streetcar to the commercial(or along the commercial) district. railroad suburbs are often mixed use, think small towns but along railroad lines near larger cities.

I believe that the 23 was the longest streetcar route in the country (it was at least the longest in Philly), so I doubt that one ever ran all the way out to Bensalem from the city.

one minor note. germantown ave is a very old street and even predates the railroads though at that time it probably would havee been a small village in german township
