SEPTA rail workers are now on strike. I take the rail every day. Needless to say, I'm more than a little POed

Becca8377, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. This is very bad for people whose only way into town for work is the Regional Rails. I can get the Regional Rails into town from Melrose Park, but I usually take the 28 bus to Fern Rock, and then the BSL into town, so I think I'll be okay. But I am worried about enough room on buses, trolleys, and the subway because of increased ridership during the strike, with people who are able to use those other ways around. I live in Oak Lane. My niece is getting married in Horsham today, the first day of the strike, so I have to take the 55 bus out and back. I'm getting onto the bus at 69th Avenue, and I hope there will be enough room for me. Have you looked into car pooling?

It SUCKS. Especially, now, that there will be 24hr weekend service on the El and BSL.

But the union involved hasn't had a contract in 4 years. I was around when the other strike happened 30 years ago but I don't remember what impact it had. I would assume that Monday morning will be a MESS when you add in the stuff with that bridge being out and I95!

In 1992, here in Pittsburgh, we were faced with a major strike by PAT.

Pittsburgh's insightful mayor at the time, Sophie Masloff, was able to come up with a strategy to bring it to an end.

Its the same state, and the same kind of agency involved.

Rail to where? If you're in Manayunk you have several buses to choose from. So if you're going to CC or even towards Norristown you should be fine even if you gotta deal with a cumbersome commute.

This why they don't call it SEPTIC for nothing.

Suburban Trolley Route 101, 102, and the Norristown High Speed line will definitely be overcrowded and filled to capacity. Hopefully SEPTA will increase service on those lines until the strike is over.

Amtrak is another option for some commuters.

Yes but a very expensive alternative option compared to SEPTA fares.

But the strike may be short-lived, at least for now.

Gov. Corbett said Saturday he will ask President Obama to appoint a presidential emergency board to mediate the labor dispute and compel the striking engineers and electrical workers to return to work for 240 days.
SEPTA strike could be short-lived

Absolutely ridiculous. This is the reason unions are on their way out in Philly. They are pushing the limits. SEPTA just got new funding to repair outdated and dilapidated infrastructure. So SEPTA employees see this as a means to force more money out of their employer? Come on. A little ridiculous.
