What are the worst and the best areas in Philly from a safety standpoint?

Beside the typycal famous landmark, if I wanted to see Philly in say 4 days, and have a feel for the city, niot just take famous pics, where would you suggest I go? It would be wife and I, and we love to walk/use public transportation (when we can, meaning when we leave Florida..).

I try to have an idea of Philly, what would be particular neighorhoods to see and walk through, special bars or places to eat (not chains), just about anything that is different than what you typically find online in the "top 10 things to do in Philly".

Sorry, I know, I am being kind of vague...

Definitely check out some of the ethnic neighborhoods and try some of their food. For example Port Richmond for Polish food or the Lower northeast for some middle eastern or brazillian food its very diverse up there. Some parts of west Philly but I don't know it that well. South Philly italian market area. Some of the Northwest neighborhoods. Be careful in most of North Philly and parts of West, not the best areas but still have character and great people. You are in a city and safety is relative to your comfortability and street smarts. I know people who think the area around Jefferson (Market East) is ghetto and others who can go walk on Kensington ave and be fine so take your pic.

Center City in general will probably be your main area to hang out but you could go the state penitentiary and then hang out in the fairmount area, or go to the penn museum of anthropology then hang around penn's campus and university city. Other ideas would be the Italian market and passyunk ave or going to fishtown / northern liberties and seeing some shows / live music and the bars.

If you only have four days( and you want to skip the tourist trap area around Independence Hall)explore a couple of neighborhoods in Center City( which is what we call downtown): Midtown Village and Rittenhouse(plenty of restaurants/bars). Or check out University City which is just as its title describes it: home to universities namely U of PA, Drexel, U of the Sciences and the University City Science Center.

If you like museums you might want stroll along Benjamin Franklin Parkway and visit the Academy of Natural Sciences, Franklin Inst. Science Museum, Barnes Foundation art museum, Rodin Museum, Phila Museum of Art with the Perlman Bldg wing.

Where Jefferson actually is, from 9th to 11th, Walnut to Locust, is hardly ghetto. And, is truthfully, better than it's ever been. Market East(centered on Market St)which will look very different in a couple of years is indeed tacky now.

This is a good overview.

oh and hey Curlydubs, Richmond is a steaming pile-o-crap. At that the whole Virginia inferiority Complex on this site is pretty interesting. Never knew about it until coming on here.

I will give you an example of this type of mentality. This goes for DC also, These people think that since that have a few dozen southern style streets like this: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.5515...8i6656!6m1!1e1 , they have the most pretty/amazing city. While beautiful, the ignorance to believe that Philadelphia lacks streets like this is unbelievable. There are whole sections of the city, while not southern, are just as beautiful and charming. Along with those sections, Philadelphia has safe that are much more reminiscent of NYC that are way more dense and urban than anywhere in the RVA/DC/B'More stratosphere.

I find it even more odd that someone from Richmond, a city notorious for its crime, would be so quick to thrown Philly under the bus.

I would take 19th/20th century rowhouses over this everyday of my life:

And exactly what does DC and Bmore have to do with this? And idk if you said what you said just get under dude's skin but Richmond's a pretty nice city as well. He generalized the entire city of Philadelphia, is what you're doing any better?
