Hi! We are relocating to the West Chester area from Illinois. We currently have our son enrolled in an amazing public school with lots of support. He is thriving. So we are looking for something as good or better! Our son will be starting first grade this Fall. He has autism, language delay and sensory processing disorder. He has a full time teachers assistant. He is in special education but is spending 65% of his day in the gen ed classroom. He is reading at a second grade level and is on grade level in all other areas. We visited schools in Downingtown school district and were not happy with their program or lack of program. No sensory room, autistic support classes were based on geography not on function of the children. HELP!

Try West Chester itself, Chadds Ford, Malvern, Newtown Square, Havertown, Springfield (Delaware County), or Bromall. I would bet that you'd find what you are looking for in one of these districts. PA has very strict laws for Special Education students and some school districts provide the basics, others are able to go above and beyond. Also, since many special education programs are administered from an Intermediate unit (instead of a local school district), but then placed in local schools~you may find the answers or the program you are looking for by contacting the Intermediate Unit for the area in which you plan to live. Looks like IU 24 would be the place to start. Chester County Intermediate Unit / Overview

OP: If the public school district where you will be living cannot meet your child's needs, and that can be proven, you might be able to obtain funding to send him to a private school. Hilltop Prep in Bryn Mawr might be a good choice.

EDIT: I don't think Hilltop accepts children as young as 2nd grade. In that case, you might consider Stratford Friends in Newtown Square?

Please start a new thread. The thread that you are replying to was started by a new poster four years ago and he/she has not been back to city-data. People will end up replying to that person instead of you.
