I have recently taken a job in Coatesville and I figured I would move to Philadelphia. I am planning on visiting Philly in a couple weeks to check out the city and get an idea on the layout and potential apartments. I am planning on renting a studio apartment and intend to live near the city center. I could afford upwards of $1300ish a month however I would like to keep it as cheap as possible.

I live about an hour outside of Chicago and would love to experience living in a city for a change. I enjoy walking around and exploring, visiting bars, restaurants, & museums, and would love to bike around the city after work. Some of my hobbies include: photography, brewing, & outdoor activities (mountain biking, hiking, fishing, etc.). I am mainly looking at places where it would be easy to go out and walk around to meet new people.

I've been looking for potential apartments in areas surrounding CC as most people tend to recommend those areas. I realize no area is completely safe and the areas change greatly so I figured my visit to the city will give the greatest overview of potential places to live. If anyone has any recommendations for these areas or other areas of interest that would be much appreciated!

I am curious about parking in the city as I will be commuting to and from work by car. Is it possible to park on the street and if so are there time limits? (Shift work might occur) Or would it be better to purchase a spot in a parking garage or just move a little bit further from CC where parking on the street is less restricted?

Also I have considered West Chester as well as it would be a shorter commute however I would really like to experience living in the city (as well as have the options of taking the train to visit nearby areas). However if anyone has some input I might be able to be swayed.

Is it possible for you to reverse commute from the city via AmTrak?

Exactly what I would suggest. A Philly-to-Coatesville commute by car would be extremely grueling. All major routes going westward from the city are chronically congested.

If not Amtrak, I would suggest looking into potential transportation from the Thorndale SEPTA station (some employers offer shuttles).

With no traffic its over an hour drive - there is RARELY no traffic at rush hour - I seriously could envision 2 hour commutes each way some days

West Chester may be a decent alternative

Coatesville is just not commuter friendly from CC - Parts of North Jersey just outside of Manhattan might actually be quicker from CC than Coatesville

good luck but please do consider the commute

Manyunk if to live in the city (still would have to pay wage tax) or Conshy (No city tax and rail service pretty easy to CC) may be another option - still probably close to an hour commute to Coatesville

the Coatsville commute would probably be similar to say the Loop or River North to well North of Waukegan (maybe even Wisc) on a daily basis for perspective

If he's moving to West Chester then a cheap alternative would be to take Krapf Route A.

TMACC :: Krapf's 'A' Bus Line
