Society Hill seems to be a lovely area the times I've visited but what's crime like in the area? Do police do a good job?

Is it a place where one can walk around at night? What are the "border neighborhoods" like?

Thanks much in advance

Society Hill is sandwiched between Old City to the north and the South Street area to, well, the South. Nightlife abounds in both of these areas. In Old City, the 2nd Street corridor is arguably the epicenter of trendy clubs and bars. You may encounter drunk 20-somethings blowing off steam but not much worse. South Street is trying to cling to its bohemian past. On weekends at least, it will skew more to teenagers and younger adults at night. Again, I would only predict mild spillover as people travel up to take the subway or train home.

In short, you'll be fine, especially if you're accustomed to urban living. It's in the city's best interest to keep Center City safe so you will see more visible police downtown there than anywhere else. And with Society Hill being one of the three most expensive places to live in the city - along with Rittenhouse Square and Chestnut Hill - you can bet that residents feel comfortable in their environment.

As a resident of Society Hill, I have never felt unsafe walking around the neighborhood at night. The normal caution one uses in any urban situation is advisable, of course.
