I'm looking to make a move in 3-4 months. No rush. What worked for you, Craig's list, trulia, going to a realtor? Any help is appreciated.

Hotpads.com!!! It pulls from all the websites and puts it on a nice little map for you. Padmapper.com does the same thing.

I also used a realtor and Craigslist, but Hotpads was the winner for me. The realtor was way more of a hassle - they can only show you places that work with realtors and pay them a commission for securing a tenant.

Yes, an amalgamator is a good start, although sometimes they miss some apartments. Craigslist seems to be by far the largest collection of listings online. Otherwise, you might have luck just going to the area you want to live and looking for buildings with rental signs and contact numbers. Realtors are not particularly helpful unless you're looking for a house because they usually only show units listed on the MLS.

Craigslist is how I found my place and started about 4 months before my lease expired

i also used craigslist , twice.

1st time about 6 years ago i sauntered about , took my time and checked out a lot of places and basically had my pick. last time , just about a year ago , any listing more than 24 hours old was basically obsolete. I actually scheduled 2 viewings that the realtors didnt even show up to. figured out fast that i had to be on c-list multiple times a day , and make contact and schedule viewings asap.

Apt i ended up in was actually being held for someone else but they said I could submit an application in case they fell thru , lucky for me they decided not to take it last minute.

ymmv but in fishtown where i was looking it was a rat race. aggregators will prob help get all the listings but u will still have to act fast most likely
