A lot of people don't know but padman from the movie was the real deal. I saw him NBC10 the other day.

Also the padman's son in the movie is a kid he is actually training in North Philly: Malik Bazille

That's probably not true today. I find that a bit sad since the city has the richest boxing legacy in the entire world.
You are right. Philly has an amazing history and heritage of boxing, almost no rivals.

Even in the late 19th Century famous Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins was painting boxers and boxing scenes.

I like reading about the mob-connected Mx "Boo Boo" Hoff and his stable of boxing champs.

What nicknames these guys had: "Sweet Pea" ... "The Little Fish" ... "Black Gold" ... "The Italian Assassin" ... "The Pride of Tacony" ... "The Yid Kid."

Saw this movie twice this weekend (with two different camps, since this was the hot movie for the holiday week in my area). Fantastic movie, and it really showcased Philly well to a global audience, in my opinion. The 'jawn' explanation scene was cute, and there was a ton of local shots of the city that were great (Johnny Brenda's and Electric Factory will probably see a tourism spike lol). Wasn't a huge fan of the street racing scenes, but I respect that the film is unafraid to show a different, unsanitized subculture. The soundtrack to the film was also amazing (the Roots! Meek!). Overall, just a fantastic movie (should be in the Oscar discussion) and a great representation of Philadelphia. After seeing this at UA Riverview, my date and I had to go up the steps!

Yeah, ironically, it may very well end up being the kind of sleeper Oscar film that the original was. In some ways it couldn't happen at a better time for the city.... right when there is a degree of positive energy in the city.

You all, where is Joe Frazier?!

And, Ali lived in Overbrook Farms for a while back in the 70s.

You just had to do it, didn't you? You said that dreaded word, rowhouses! I expect steeps any moment now to tell us how horrible they are. LOL.

I was just going through some of the lesser known fighters (to casual boxing fans anyway). Pretty much everyone knows who Joe Frazier is unless they've been living under a rock, have no interest in sports whatsoever, or were born after 2000.

As the crumbling fighter reached his feet, referee Bill Paige came in at the eight-count to check on Harding. He asked the required, "Can you continue, are you OK?" Harding's response was perfect.

"I'm from Philadelphia!" he snapped."
Never mind the rest, Philly is the best
