If you eat a hoagie from south philly and then go to Jimmy Johns and Subway you will know for a fact that it is not the same thing.

I recently had an "Old Italian" hoagie at Primos ... it was pretty good in my opinion, not great like at Sarcones or the other South Philly places ... but they didn't skimp on the meats and cheeses, but the seeded hoagie roll they use is not very good, the guy told me the name of the supplier but I never heard of them. One thing about Primos is that have different types of Italian hoagie: spicy, half and half, mild, sharp, "Old" etc.

BTW, there are a few good places to get a Jewish corned beef and/or pastrami on rye: Schlesinger's near 15th and Locust, Racheal's Nosherei, and of course the 4th Street Deli.

I agree, not a fan of Primo's rolls. Try Jack's Place @Hegerman and Wellington in Tacony for the best Italian hoagie in the city.

That's like saying McDonald's isn't a cheeseburger because gourmet burgers exist.

I haven't tried that place yet - it's near Rittenhouse Square I know - but I hear it's wonderful!

Unfortunately the legendary Kosher "style" Deli in University City - Koch's - isn't the same since Barry Koch died about 6 or 7 years ago. (I say "style" because no place that services Reuben sandwiches can call itself "Kosher' since combining meat and cheese is certainly NOT kosher!!!)

Anyway back to pork (absolutely positively NOT KOSHER! ) sandwiches and just want to voice the opinion that Jake's Sandwich Shop makes decent pork and brisket sandwiches. They're located on 12th Street in Center City and now also on 40th Street in University City.

Isn't the same shop across the street from Fresh Grocer on 40th and walnut?
