Market St. east is kind of far from scenic. With all the cash-for-gold stores, and general ghetto atmosphere.
Well, I mean if you keep your eyes on city hall then it's scenic! Yeah yeah...there is the bad stuff, it's still nice.

It won't be like that in a few years.

It really wasn't that long ago that DC was the murder capital of the country.

As someone else pointed out the bigger concern for the OP is the weather. A long, possibly cold, walk to the
Convention Center.
I don't have that perception about Philly at all. I have never been to the city at all and don't know where the convention center or train station are located vis a vis downtown. I am an elderly female (although I walk pretty fast) and it is always best to double check. (I currently live in DC, by the way.)

Besides, I get lots of other good advice about things to see as well. I plan on spending the day in Philly so if anyone has any other suggestions in addition to the Flower Show and Terminal Market, I am game.

Thank you to everyone for your kind advice.

or ride the Regional Rail between 30th and Jefferson. Free if you have an Amtrak ticket.
I was going to ask about the "Jefferson" but I looked it up. I'm from Philly I just call it 11th Street

Also 30th Street to the Convention Center is a loooong walk. It's not 20 miles, but it's not just a few blocks either. Think about 1y...30th to 11th, almost 20 blocks. And yes, Reading Terminal is a MUST!

I am really looking forward to this year. Last year was a bit of a disappointment but the year before was phenomenal. The only plus last year was that I was living here by then so I could walk up during the evening, so I didn't have to deal with the crowds. The only problem was, it was so cold on the way home that my contacts clouded up in my eyes, and I had to blindly hail a cab!
Wow. Same thoughts here. I see and get what they were TRYING to do with the theme -- ARTiculture. But the execution was utterly disappointing. Compared to previous years. Just no "WOW!" factor. Also I think a snow storm really affected attendance last year (or was that the year before?). I have high hopes for this year's theme..."Celebrate the Movies."

It is not that far, only about 1.3 miles. I used to walk from 30th street to 20th and Market via JFK.. About 10 minutes walk fast pace.

If OP has never been to Philadelphia, it's worth a stop at Philadelphia Visitor center on 6th and Market.

OK, farther than I would walk (unless I HAD to). But I was also thinking about walking down Market to 11th and then up. But. you're right. I don't know why I didn't think about cutting "the back way" down JFK, to Filbert/Arch.

This is what I was going to post. Take ANY Center City-bound SEPTA Regional Rail train from 30th Street Station to Jefferson Station (aka Market East Station) and you don't even have to go outside at Market East to get into the Convention Center. You can ride for free between 30th Street, Suburban Station, and Market East/Jefferson Station with a valid (same-day) Amtrak ticket.

Incidentally, as others have noted the walk between 30th Street and the Convention Center is safe. It is just kind of long, and you'll also need to cross Broad Street, which can be fairly busy traffic-wise.

Independence Mall (i.e. Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Constitution Center) and the U.S. Mint (located just off Independence Mall) are a fairly short walk (probably 1/2 mile at most) from the Convention Center. The Convention Center is at 11th Street just north of Market, while Independence Mall runs between Race (2 blocks north of Market) and Chestnut (1 block south of Market) between 5th Street and 6th Street.

I should note that you could take Greyhound from DC (Union Station) to Philadelphia (Philadelphia Greyhound Terminal); the Greyhound Terminal is about one block from the Convention Center. Having said that, the Greyhound Terminal is small and cramped (considering how busy it usually is) and you still have some unsavory riders on Greyhound buses (though that has improved significantly in recent years - I speak from first-hand experience). Also, I don't think any of the Washington-Philadelphia Greyhound routes are non-stop; they all stop in Baltimore and some stop in Wilmington too. That makes taking Greyhound to Philadelphia from DC a considerably longer trip time-wise than taking Amtrak between the two cities. (I live just outside of DC and travel to Philadelphia at least a half-dozen times per year, sometimes by transit, sometimes by car.)

Before I forget. Words of advice since you had never been to Philly:
Do not buy food from the expo. It costs you arms and legs. Reading Terminal as you mentioned is only one building partition away. And just behind the convention center, there is Chinatown. Abundant of food!
I saw a lot of people who went to the convention center, bought $6 hot dogs just to find out that Chinatown is just behind the building. Get your hand stamped, venture Reading Terminal or Chinaown during lunch and come back to see more awesome flowers!

Around the area you can visit:
1. Independence Mall. You will see Liberty Bell, etc. Just bear in mind of ours of operation though. I believe they close kind of early. I assume that at least you want to spend plenty of time in the show.
2. Chinatown. It is less gentrified than Chinatown in DC.
3. Museum Parkway. You will not probably have time to enjoy any of the museums but at least you can snap pictures here and there. But if you have time to visit one of them, I would like to highlight Academy of Natural Science of Drexel. It is not as huge as Rodin or Franklin Institute or even Art Museum, but it is worth seeing. They have a mini butterfly garden. It is cute. Also right now they have LEGO exhibition in Franklin Institute.
4. ANNNNDDDDD if you actually like gory stuff and watched American Horror Story: Freak Show; well the main exhibit in the series is based on Mutter Museum.
