I didn't want to derail the conversation into a debate over uniforms. : )

But for us, it is absolutely a concern about how the influence of, and message being sent by dressing in essentially the same clothes day in and day out would affect our energetic 6 year old who loves wearing all kinds of colors.

That concern (and others, obviously) will affect our decision on what school we would want our child in, which will affect where/if we move to Philly, which is why I asked my original question.

If it's any help - I'd really like information / first hand experiences with schools in the Society Hill, Queen Village & Pennsport neighborhoods. I've looked at greatschools.org, but the scant reviews are mostly outdated.

Thanks!

I don't think you could be more wrong. uniforms are a great way to improve the experience of kids in schools rather than having your clothes indicate your income level.

I mentioned the Penn/Sadie Alexander school here in University City as having an excellent reputation. Another one, I'm told, that is among the best is the Samuel Powel School in Powelton Village near Drexel University.

Thanks for the suggestion of Samuel Powel Clark Park. I found out that Powel is one of 2 schools in the city that do not require uniforms, which is a plus for us.

I think Powel is only K-5 if that matters to you.

I know it's a late comment, but I wonder if parents under Pennsylvania law are allowed to "opt out" of any uniform requirement of any public school they are assigned to based on a "bona-fide" philosophical objection? Texas allows parents to do that as part of its education code.
