Help on non-resident PA/Philly Tax (Philadelphia: 2015, salary, taxes)

Dear All,

I would need your help for my tax. I work for an company at Philly. I moved to AZ at 2014, but I still work for the same company remotely (e.g. work at home). For 2014, the payroll of my employer has deducted the PA and Philly tax directly from my salary. Since I was not a resident at PA for 2014, do I need to pay my PA tax at Philly city tax for 2014. Can I get refund for either of the two tax at 2014?

If you were not actually living in the state you should not of been taxed by the state. If you worked for a company based in Phila but did not actually conduct that work within the city limits you are not subject to the wage tax. Your employer should not have withheld those taxes. You can file a Pa state tax form and should get your refund. I have no idea how you go about getting the city wage tax refund.

Thank you very much for the reply. It was screwed up for 2014 because we did not update the W4 form. We will update W4 for 2015, and hope the PA city and Philly tax will not be withhold anymore.

Also, if you live outside the city and work for a company based in Philadelphia but work some days outside the city, you can petition the city to refund you for the days you did not work in Philadelphia.
