If you'll be there for 5 days, it may be worth getting a Weekly TransPass which is unlimited rides for 7 days for $24.
Is this for the town bus and far is the subway from the greyhound bus station

It's the mile or so walk to Broad street is not what I would recommend if you are not familiar with the area.

Is it even possible to walk down Penrose? How do you get past the refineries?

Get the transpass for $24. It will give you unlimited rides on buses, trolleys, and subways. There's literally no reason to try and walk, especially since you don't know the area that well, and may be carrying swag from the convention.

there is a subway stop literally a block or so from the greyhound bus terminal, so get off greyhound, get on the market frankford EL to broad street, hop off and take the broad street line south to your hotel and there you are.

Good call, for some reason I thought it was southwest of the bridge.

Advice for OP: If you don't have the cash for a fluke cab fare, it might be better to stay home. What's your back-up plan if you run out of money? Did you budget for food? How about all the junk they sell at Wizard World?
