Hi all,

I recently got a job at the Naval Yard, so I'm relocating to Philly from West Chester. I will be living in Fairmount, but I'd rather not drive down 76 and/or 676/95, and would like to rely on public transit. Based on my research, bus coverage in Fairmount seems to be fairly excellent to Center City, with an average travel time of around 20-25 minutes.

My question is, how reliable is the Navy Yard Shuttle that stops in Center City (I believe it's near Jefferson Station)? Is it usually on time? And how does it fare in traffic? I would be connecting to it at its Center City stop, or, worse case scenario, taking the BSL to AT&T Station and taking THAT Navy Shuttle. Looking to keep my commute to no more than an hour each way. Any insight is greatly appreciated--thanks in advance.

Having trouble finding the live map / tracking for that route or I'd suggest to check that out during rush hours. Most buses during normal commute hours are very frequent.

The above info is outdated - SEPTA hasn't run the Navy Yard Shuttle in quite a while.

I have no experience taking it. But...

The express one is geared towards people coming in on the regional rails or living downtown.

I'd have to imagine the one feeding into the BSL would be the better one to take, seeing as you'd be taking SEPTA into Center City anyway. Less time and a shorter distance on the bus. But that's just a personal opinion. Perhaps you'll need to experiment.

If you're taking the bus down town you probably want the express. You might also try the trolley to broad and then the subway. I would suggest you look at francisville which lies between fairmount and broad and walking to the subway

Yea, I've thought of that as well. I'm 11 blocks from the BSL, so it's a doable, if a little long, walk to the station. I could also take the trolley to the BSL, then BSL to the shuttle, but that's a lot of moving parts. Want to keep it down on transfers, if possible.

FamousBlueRaincoat, yea, I'll have to experiment. Bus to BSL to shuttle seems the most reliable, though bus to just shuttle seems less of a hassle.

Just curious more than anything on how bad morning traffic is from 6am to 730am on 76/95--is busing it/driving suicide compared to the BSL and a short shuttle?

The shuttle seems quite reliable and they send texts and tweets (any my company posts notices) when there are anticipated problems or schedule changes (eg, crash causing major delays on 95, extra heavy 'red' days at the sports complex). I vaguely recall one afternoon that they cancelled the center city route (it may have been because of snow), but still ran to the BSL so no one was stranded. There are 'snow day' schedules and holiday hours, but these are well posted.

You'll need to figure out if you can take the Express or need a 'local' that comes to your area of the NY. That could be a 15 minute difference in commute time.

My colleagues from Fairmount bus or walk to the center city stop, though in nice weather a lot of them bike to work instead.
