The racial classifications in Latin America are different than in North America.

Where as in the United States, someone with Barack Obama's ancestry is considered black. He wouldnt be considered black in Latin America. Many Dominicans of mulatto appearance identify as Dominican, first and foremost.

I get that, but for many they seem to deny their African ancestry altogether. It's interesting.

Another thing i will add, in addition to what i stated earlier (in regards to big increases of Puerto Rican and Dominican populations in Philly, who are atleast partly African descended)

There will also be a big increase from non hispanic blacks, especially from New York, and to a lesser extant other more expensive or more crime-ridden areas of the northeast like New Jersey or Baltimore... However most of these non hispanic blacks leaving the NYC metro area for the Philly area are mostly of Caribbean or African descent, Jamaicans, Haitians, Nigerians. Most native born Black Americans who leave the NYC metro area go down south especially to Georgia or North Carolina, though u may have some go to Maryland or Southeast PA/Philly, most that come here from NYC are actually of Caribbean or African origin. However, the native Black American population in the Philadelphia area may increase slighty, though some of them are leaving the city for the Philly suburbs of Delco or montomery.

The non hispanic black population in raw numbers will definitely go up. However percentage wise, it may decrease slighty like a percentage point, because of faster growth of other groups.

I think what phillydominican has mentioned may be the fact that many Mexicans who have settled in the Northeastern cities like NYC, Philadelphia, and DC, and Northeastern states from MA to VA, a huge majority of them are illegal aliens. Is it a racist fact, not at all, it's just the cold truth. It's not like CA or TX, where in addition to illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America, you also have Chicanos who have been there for generations.

I foresee most of the illegal aliens from Mexico and some of the Central Americans (especially MS-13 members) leaving during the next decade, and the greatest decline will take place in the Northeast and much of the South because when cheap labor was needed, many contractors took advantage of the open borders and started actively recruiting Mexicans to either work in agriculture, landscaping, constructing, or many low wage sectors. With Trump in office, that loophole will disappear, especially when the government is on the verge of building a barrier on the Southern border.

Is there an actual point of bumping old threads? This one died 4 years ago.

I just found this thread days ago. Is it against the law to post on old threads?

No it's not against the rules. If the moderators didn't want people posting to old threads, they should auto lock down and archive any threads older than x days

Actually, the forum operators usually encourage new posts to old threads by means of a graphic at the bottom of threads where no one has posted for a while.

The graphic has words to the effect that people out there would welcome some fresh perspectives on the topic and that if you have some to add, please add them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Philadelphia's black (African American to me is really more of an ethnicity than race, but that's another topic) percentage, not raw numbers, dropped, not because blacks are leaving, but because other groups, mainly Latinos (mostly Puerto Ricans and Dominicans), and Asians are coming to the city in record numbers. The same is happening in cities such as NYC, DC, Chicago, and even in Detroit.

And as much as I'd like to see Philly's black population continue to grow, it's very strange that cities which have a higher black percentage (such as Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, and Cleveland), have higher levels of disinvestment and abandonment. Especially considering that I come from a Caribbean immigrant family and grew up in business, it's very odd for me to come into a community and not see at least small businesses that cater to a particular community, which is why those cities haven't had any significant immigration since the start of the 20th century.
