I see it as a good thing. A chance to get an entrenched, corrupt old-timer out and somebody new (and hopefully) more ethical in. Defeating sitting congressmen is damn hard, but good 'ole Chacka just made it a bit easier.

Was anyone surprised?

For better or worse, term limits would tend to reduce this kind of abuse of power.

Given the steep learning curve, I think the better alternative would be for non-partisan commissions to redraw congressional districts.

Unfortunately, that's never going to happen.

Non-partisan?! What the devil is non-partisan or bi-partisan today?! So yes, never gonna happen.

A lot of states have non/bi-partisan redistricting commissions, which, even if not 100% successful, are still leaps and bounds better than the alternative.

Nonetheless, sticking to the alternative is the one thing both sides of the U.S. congressional aisle are bound to agree on.

Good! Get him out of there, along with the rest of City Council (except Kenyatta Johnson and Mark Squilla). Philadelphia has a lot of positive energy going for it right now, and we could use a Council full of elected officials who actually CARE about this city. We need cheerleaders and activists who have nothing more than the improvement of Philadelphia in mind. We need people who will court Fortune 500 companies to relocate and do business here; developers to build tall, dense, imaginative structures; transportation advocates who will petition the state and federal government for funding for heavy rail projects, such as the Roosevelt Boulevard Subway/Elevated (in conjunction with a MFL extension) and the Navy Yard extension (PATCO, S. 25th Street, and N. 5th Street could use lines, too), and; people dedicated enough to tackle the issues of zoning (ALL of Center City should be CMX-5), Philadelphia public schools, the tax code, grilling delinquent property owners instead of raising taxes for tax-paying city residents, poverty, and public works, such as preemptive planning on capping I-95 before the federal government finalizes the plans for it within the next 10 years. Philly is already such a great city, and would only get better with caring, efficient, effective leadership.

It's a vicious circle. The city wage tax has kept the city afloat for decades. It also chases out & keeps out companies.

He was once seen as someone new & more ethical. Everyone in the region knew him because of his mother.

That said, there's been a long tradition of corruption. The star of that wing of government was Ozzie Meyers who gave us this pearl of wisdom. Money talks. Bull sh*t walks.

In the entertainment division, the stars still have to be Milton Street & Franny Rafferty who used to duke it out during city council meetings.

"We...." Really... You don't live in Philadelphia so you can't vote here. You can't change anything on Council. And why the support for Johnson who's done too much to stop gentrification in Point Breeze because he wants to stop Ori F?

Alan Domb, may change some of the mentality on Council. Apparently you don't seem to know that he won in the primary for a Councilman-at-Large seat.

You are already know that trying to budge Congressional Republicans wrt infrastructure projects is a waste of time.

Hmmm, I think you mean our previous mayor, John Street. Afaik, Milton was never on Council. He was in PA legislature years ago.
