New to Philly, but coming from always living and working in cities, so public transit is not unfamiliar.

I'll be commuting daily on the 57 bus from Queen Village all the way to N Philly - W Hunting Park Ave.
any advice from seasoned 57 riders?

How full is this bus typically?

It ebbs & flows when coming from South Philly then somewhat emptying between Market & Spring Garden.
Begins to pick back up around Girard deep into Erie Av, then emptying quite a bit around there. You'll be fine, just a long bus ride.

Appreciate the info.

I'm hearing all kinds of nutty tales from folks about how bad the route is, and actually hearing from folks 'i would NEVER ride that entire route'.
All just normal paranoid folks or is there any merit? I'm stuck either way - taking that bus through to my job in North Philly is an absolute.

It depends on where you have to go in North Philly, meaning if your home and job is in-between Front & 5th then that may be your only choice if you aren't close to the subway. Even then you'd still need to transfer to another bus heading Northeast to work. So if the 57 is the only route that can take you nearly door to door then that'll be your best bet, but it's a long ride that has some colorful characters of a few colors (pun intended) and ethnicities that makes it an enjoyable ride at times.....It's just a long ride for me.

I've only been on it a few times and don't know what it's like to have to ride on a daily basis both ways.
Good luck.

Sometimes interesting things happen on the bus - but mostly they don't. The reality is that it's always good to be alert, and that crime exists, and if you go through North Philly on the bus every day there might come a time you feel uncomfortable - I've been doing it for years and can only think of one time some guy stoned out of his mind early in the morning before sunrise on a holiday wouldn't leave me alone, so I just got off the bus and took a different way. He didn't want anything from me, was just really too stoned and was hassling a bunch of people, and I knew my way around enough to find another way.

But the people who say they would never take the bus up there are living in a fantasy world, fed by too much TV news, where you're always about to be victimized by some poor person of color.

I say enjoy your time in a part of the city most of the Queen Village crowd is ignorant of - make sure to do some shopping and dining over on 5th Street, especially the bakeries, - both in Olney and around Lehigh, and use discretion about who you spread the word to about some of the neat places in this part of the city, as part of the charm is not having to deal with precious people.
