I can't answer your question except for staying that the prr had at least two ways to make every move through zoo because it is such a critical junction.
Swampoodle - it's day has passed. The problem isn't dispatching or the nec but a lack of investment which would be just as well served by putting the same money into dismantling zoo. The idea, afaik, is to move interlocking east of north philly such that amtrak and septa are separated before they hit zoo which means the chw would only compete for space with the trenton line and more importantly it would not cross the nec at grade anymore. They should also restore the connections to ny trains at north philly.
It's routing via 30th st is more useful than early in the commuter tunnel days as the number of jobs at 30th skyrocket

It's be great if more trians stopped at N Philly - Amtrak and NJ Transit. The Chestnut Hill West and Trenton connections - the only connection you can make most of the time - is terribly scheduled, borderline useless. And during rush hour it's often a flag stop for the CHW - even though the train has to crawl around the curb anyway and is never stopped for long even when folks get on there.

As to separating the NEC and SEPTA - is this done anywhere else on the NEC, by NJ Transit, Metro North, or MBTA? It seems like a really sharp idea - never really paid close enough attention when on other parts of the line.

The 400 million dollar high speed rail project that will save 90 Seconds in nj quietly includes the midway loop (or whatever it's called) that will allow njt to loop commuter trains without crossing the nec at grade
