Can anyone give me as much info as possible about Mt Airy, PA?

What's the difference between West and East Mt. Airy? Are there many good restaurants, bars, cafes, grocery stores....within walking distance? Is it very social or do you pretty much have to go into Philly for that?
What it the general cost of housing as far as a two bedroom rental or even to buy? High taxes? Crime? Good schools?

Any information would help! Thanks so much!

Mt Airy is a neighborhood within the city limits of Philadelphia. Its an outter-ring neighborhood, fairly old settled in the early 1700s I believe and it has its own livley main street with all your looking for. The "main street" I was referring to is Germantown Ave as that section of the city was settled by ...Germans.

The difference between East and west Mt Airy is Germnantown Ave. If your on the N side its East and if your on the south side its West MT Airy. The west side is richer and more affluent. The east side is more working class.

This should answer most of your questions:

West Mt. Airy is known for being the most ethnically diverse community in the city. It is also a (stereo?)typical destination for lesbian partners looking to settle down. East Mt. Airy has a primarily black population and may indeed lean working-class but is stable and quiet.

Would you say that Mt. Airy or Ardmore are more walker friendly neighborhoods? Or even Narberth?

By walker friendly I mean are there many homes that are close to the main shopping areas and is it common to not use a car? And is it safe as far as walking across traffic, etc.

I think Mt Airy and Ardmore are both very walkable and about the same from home to store to train . Narberth is really tight, probably the closest walking from train to stores to home outside of Chicago or NYC

How are the taxes in these places? I would think that Mt. Airy taxes would be more because they are in the Philadelphia city limits right?
