To be fair and to get a more balanced opinion, suggest also post this in the Baltimore Thread.

You want to live in the city or the burbs? The last I checked the nice areas inside the city of baltimore were just as expensive as center city philly and you definitely get a lot more in center city.

I'm writing from Baltimore and can confirm that home prices for a similar neighborhood are more equal than you would think. What I have to push back against is the contention that Philadelphia is much stronger in the life sciences - especially when it comes to healthcare itself - which is Baltimore's strongest industry.

Philly is inevitably stronger when it comes to pharmaceutical companies because Baltimore doesn't realty have any... And how could that happen when Johns Hopkins is the largest medical research institution in the country? The city started playing catch-up ten years ago but hasn't really begun to cash in on its potential.

Having living experience outside both cities, I would lean towards Philly, as it has more to offer in terms of entertainment, as well as job market.

As far as living expenses, I think they are comparable. What is nice, is that Baltimore and NYC are pretty much split by Philly, so you'll be able to go to either city when you want.

I hope that helps!

Yes, Baltimore has Johns Hopkins, but Philadelphia has multiple facilities including HUP, Thomas Jefferson, & Temple.

Hopkins isn't the only hospital in Baltimore either, but it is perrenially one of the top hospitals in the country and world. Up there with the Mayo clinic.

How did this gravitate to Best Hospitals? Both Mayo and Penn have perennially been in the USN Top 10.

I didn't make the initial assertion about hospital superiority. But that really is a strength for Bmore. HUP is a very good hospital, but it's not on the level of Mayo Clinic & JH.

What I was trying to get at is Hopkins as a medical, etc. research institution. In one ranking JHU is number three behind MIT and UCLA. The University of Pennsylvania is at number 35 (right behind the University of Maryland.) This wouldn't be a big deal to most people but might mean more to original poster.

Where are you getting this ranking? As a medical research institution, Penn is absolutely among the top in the US, and far ahead of UMD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medica..._United_States
