My husband and I just booked a trip to Philadelphia. We're staying in a hotel by the Franklin Science Museum Old City area, I think?) What are some nice restaurants in the area? I'm not picky- I'm happy with pub-type food and a beer or two. Clean is a must. I'd prefer to stay away from chains like Applebees. We like Thai and Italian food as well, but we eat it all the time at home in NY.

Any advice?

Taste is acquired, and therefore very subjective. My guess is you are looking for something local, unlike what you have in NY. For the experience, you could try Geno's steakhouse which is famed in pop culture but has bad reviews. You could also stop by the Reading terminal market, it's nothing fancy but you may like it. Not sure if I would classify it as clean but it's pretty decent for a busy market.

However, if you've got money burning a hole in your purse, check out tripadvisor ratings. That's how I check up places. The reviews are much deeper and broader than you could get here.

The Franklin Institute is the science museum but it is not Old City. If that's where you're staying, you can go north of the Parkway for Rose Tattoo, the Kite and Key, or McCrossens for pub food. South a couple of blocks and there are too many to name. Google Logan Square restaurants and see what looks good.

Geno's is not a steakhouse, it's tourist trap for crappy cheesesteaks and it is nowhere near Logan Square. Reading Terminal is good for breakfast or lunch.

OP - Check out Devil's Alley or El Rey, both are about a 10min walk south of the FI. Further away but good beer places are Monk's and Strangelove's. And even further into Old City (As PP said, FI is NOT in Old City) is 2nd Story Brewing which is a great brewpub. There's also a new City Tap House in Logan Square, I've been there a few times recently.

Check out Yelp for other places, you can search if you're looking for specific types of places.

As someone mentioned the Franklin Inst. is not in Old City. The neighborhood there is Logan Sq/Logan Circle.

Anyhow if you are willing to walk a little bit I highly recommend Mc Crossen's Tavern. It's on N. 20th St between Hamiliton and Spring Garden St. The Franklin Inst's main entrance is on 20th St.

Well... If that poster actually knew what he was talking talking, wrt steaks, he would have recommended John's Roast Pork or at least Tony Luke's.

This the first I've heard that Reading Terminal is not clean Reading Terminal is, believe it or not, the city's top tourist attraction, outdrawing even the Liberty Bell, according to the city's tourist authority. For anyone who likes food, it offers pretty much everything under the sun. We've taken all of our out of town guests there (in fact, those who did their homework requested it!). If you leave there hungry you're not trying: Home - Reading Terminal Market

Enjoy your visit.

Just a note on RTM - they are only open till 6pm Mon thru Sat and 5pm on Sun. So if you're looking at going for dinner, you'd have to make it an early dinner.

Popping up the OP and reminding posters that threads go much more smoothly if we comment on the OP and kindly disagree if someone posts something that we think is wrong, ie, no name calling or talking about other posters on the forum.

I strongly disagree. Geno's steaks are ok, there are better out there, but there's nothing wrong with them.
If they're such a "tourist trap," why do they have long lines after concerts and sporting events? (Which are attended heavily by locals?)

To the op: Try McGillin's Ale House - Great atmosphere and good bar food. I wouldn't go too late, though, because it tends to get young and loud. Best afternoon/early evening bar in the city for middle-aged people.
And I highly recommend the Reading Terminal Market for lunch. Get an Italian hoagie from Salumeria and a waffle cone from Bassett's for dessert.
