Hello to all,

I'm thinking about moving to Philadelphia from coastal Georgia and want to know what to expect as far as cost of living and taxes! And anything else worth noting. I don't know if Philly's my final decision because I lived in Boston a bit and fell in love with it. However, Boston is too expensive. I would have to sacrifice a great deal living there.

There's a sticky "Questions for Future and Potential Residents and general information". Fill that out and you will, likely, get some useful replies.

Expect kick ass if you live in the city or great suburbs if you live in the suburbs.

Thanks for all of your responses!! I just wanted to know if taxes are higher, basically. Philly seems very affordable compared to Boston, where I previously lived. The clothes are tax free, lol, and housing is uber affordable for my salary.

I've lived in Atlanta, Philly and Boston. Taxes and COL are higher in PA than in GA. That's especially true on you live in Philly. As you've noticed COL in Philly, and real estate in particular, is a good bit lower than in Boston. Good luck with your move.

you could always try CNN's Cost of Living calculator to get a ballpark range of what life would be like.

Cost of living: How far will my salary go in another city? - CNNMoney

According to this if you made 100K in Boston, you would only need to make 83K to live similarly in Philadelphia.

  • Groceries 9% more
  • Housing 29% less
  • Utilities 18% less
  • Transportation 1% less
  • Health Care 23% less
I think it is pretty messed up food costs more here for some reason.

It's a shame that there isn't some website that allows people to research COL, taxes, median income, etc.

Perhaps they could also include a forum where people could discuss city specific issues.

It should be called City Data.
