ride a car vs take septa at night time (Elco: apartment, home)

Hey everyone, moving to philadelphia from the suburbs in maryland in two weeks! I am a female, planning to live right near spring garden station near 10th street. I wanted to know how the area is there?

I will be working at temple campus and will be coming home around 9pm. For a female in her 20s that has absolutely no idea about the city, would it be better for me to take my car to work (1-2miles) or take septa? Septa monthly pass and gas+parking garage pass ends up being around the same amount of money. There is street parking in front of the apartment so no issues there. I am genuinely just really worried about my safety. Any advice would be amazing. thanks so much

Since you are new to the city it might make more sense to drive. But once you've become more adapted, commuting on Septa might work eventually.

I live slightly west of Broad St, on Spring Garden, so I use the Broad St Line a lot. I've lived in my current neighborhood for a long time. I've never had a personal problem getting off/on at the Spring Garden Station and walking alone to my residence; I'm female. I see plenty of people your age, including Temple students, all the time on the BSL so there should no problem with that. Plus Septa cops do patrol the subway at night. The BSL runs 24 hours on weekends.

10th St is 4 blocks away from the Spring Garden Station so that's about a 10 minute walk. That area(generally called Callowhill/Poplar or Eraserhead) is changing for the better. The Rt 43 bus runs along Spring Garden St but it does not run often enough during evening hours.

Given that the Northern Liberties neighborhood, pretty much all gentrified now with lots of young people, butts up against your neighborhood, you might enjoy it there. Try not to worry too much rather see it as new adventure in a new place. Chinatown is south of where you will be living so that's another point of interest.

Try to get acquainted with the area first.
After that you can be a better judge in when / where to ride SEPTA at night.

I forgot to mention that septa plans to start rolling out their new fare system on 6/13. It's explained on their website.

there's also the route 23 bus which runs up and down 11th and 12th streets. this may be a good option since it's a short ride between temple and sg..particularly at night
