True. South street (east of 7th st) would have been the obvious go-to answer not so many years ago.

There's considerable contruction around the Parkway and Logan Circle because of the Vine St Expressway rehab at 20th St. So it's a mess around there right now.

Broad and Cecil B. Moore in North Philly is pretty lively when the students who live at and attend Temple University are on campus. I will be attending Temple in the fall, so I cannot wait to be in this area. Others have mentioned it already, but Walnut between Broad and Rittenhouse Square (18th Street) is lively. As of the last few years, Chestnut between 15th and 17th has become lively due to businesses that have been priced-out of Walnut Street moving onto Chestnut.

Also, a lot of people fail to realize that East Market Street is pretty lively. This trend will continue once the East Market project, the Gallery redesign, and the other projects in Market East come to be. Then, I can imagine that East Market between City Hall and 8th Street will be teeming with foot traffic. Same thing can be said about Chestnut between Broad and 11th due to Brickstone's 1100 Chestnut project, along with East Market, which will extend to Chestnut eventually.

I finally traversed South Street from Broad Street to Front Street. It's a busy street but it lacks the vibrancy and energy associated with other world renowned thoroughfares. That's because it not a mecca for shopping. I think I only saw a Wholefoods and a CVS.

Passyunk from Broad up to Genos (9th). Philly has a ton of lively streets but like stated before they are the quaint smaller type.

I almost stopped by Geno's today. I have family visiting over the Christmas break and I'm hoping we get a chance to go to Geno's. We're definitely going to Manhattan for the Christmas displays.

You could also take them to the Macy's Christmas Light show-always a favorite of mine.

You should have gone to 18th and Walnut and Rittenhouse Sq., blocks just north of it on Sansom, blocks a bit east on Walnut and 13th St(gayborhood), parts of Chestnut St between 19th and Broad. Hell, all of Dilworth Park wrt to the holiday season. Tons of shopping there right now. The light show in CC's Macy's and the Comcast Center might interest you since you have children.

South St can be much more interesting in the summer not so much this time of year as you discovered. South St , west of Broad, toward and including the Graduate Hospital neighborhood has its charms. There is no actual Graduate Hospital now, btw. The building is mostly part of Penn Med. The western part of the building have been converted to residential.

The retail thread has been an ongoing thread for a long time. Obviously it's where we talk about shopping in CC, KoP and other local places. Perhaps you don't look at that thread.

All of the annual lights and decorations along 13th St near Tasker and Morris Sts. this time of year too!
