We are taking a short trip to Philadelphia next month, and not sure where we should stay. We want to be centrally located in the city (not the outskirts or surrounding suburbs), and want to be in a very safe area. Other than that, we're just looking for a nice, clean hotel with a bar

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Good luck because the Democratic Convention, in Phila., is late next month and they have probably booked 80-90% of the rooms in the city, especially Center City, and will likely book the rest as the convention gets closer.

I would suggest that you search out bed and breakfasts. You might get lucky with one of those.

Agree. Avoid Philly from July 23 - 29!

We've had good luck with Priceline.

That won't be an issue, as we're going to be there well before the convention (mid July). Is City Center the safest, most convenient area then? Any hotels in particular or are they all pretty comparable?

I always recommend Holiday Inn Express at 1305 Walnut. Does not have a bar, but is centrally located in the heart of Midtown Village which has a ton of bars and restaurants, and is one of the most street populated areas of center city at night so it is safe.

Since you didn't specify a price range, pretty much any hotel in Center City will be centrally located and in a safe area. My parents always stay at the Marriott right next to the convention center.

I would say any Center City hotel except the Hampton Inn at the Convention Center. Nothing wrong with it, but it's pretty isolated. Where depends on your interests. If you want to mostly visit museums, I'd suggest Embassy Suites on The Parkway or anything around Rittenhouse Square. If you want the historical district, I'd say east of Broad Street (that's 14th Street). But Center City is very compact and walkable, with excellent public transportation. So, it doesn't matter that much.

Center City is very safe, using common sense.

I wouldn't describe Hampton Inn as that isolated since it's a block away from Reading Terminal Market and two blocks away from Chinatown. There's the Home 2 which is right across from 12th St from RTM.

What planet are you living on?? That Hampton Inn is FAR from isolated.

No bar (or in-room refrigerator for that matter), but the Alexander Inn is my favorite hotel. It's a boutique, so it's quaint, ideal for couples, not families.
