I used to live in Montana and would make the trek to Philly and back once a year. I usually drove I90 through Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois picking up I80 around Chicago rolling you all the way to W. PA where you could either hop on the PA turnpike or continue on I80 to eastern PA. Although I didn't travel with a dog I met others who did.....I'd assume you'd have to make frequent stops and do your homework to find hotels that accept pets. I did do the trip in the winter a couple of times, with no real problems. But I did drive a Toyota 4x4 pickup....I don't remember hitting any horrible weather, but the potential is always there, especially crossing the Rockies.

Despite the bitter ramblings of StuckPA, you will find Philly a fantastic place to live, with so much to offer. The area's natural beauty while not as spectacular as parts of the west, is subtle and occasionally breathtaking (especially upstate - Ricketts Glen State Park comes to mind). I lived out west for 4 years, and although I (mostly) loved it i missed Philly so much that I made an overt decision to return......so I moved back without regrets.

Any other ideas for how I can get my sweet dog to Philly? Help!

Oh, and if you can recommend any neighborhoods for two gals and a huge, beautiful standard poodle... we make great neighbors!

Thanks!
Welcome! We just did the drive with 2 dogs from Seattle to Philly, via 90/94, although that is more of a "summer route." During the winter, I'd suggest heading down towards Utah and taking 70 across. It took 4 1/2 days for us, driving for about 10 hours/day.

There are a ton of affordable hotels that are pet-friendly (some do charge extra for a pet) - check AAA's website. If your dog isn't used to the car, I'd check with your current vet and see what they'd recommend (our vet had recommended Benadryl, although the dogs didn't need it). Also, make sure you have a copy of his/her latest vaccines in the car with you, plenty of water, and a cozy place for him/her to curl up in the car. Also, figure stopping every few hours for potty breaks/paw stretching into your travel time.

Good luck! Feel free to DM me if you have questions. At this point, our dogs have done 2 cross-country moves and have become total road-warriors

Edit: oops! Just realized this thread is several years old - sorry!
