Hello all, I currently reside in Cleveland and am exploring my options for relocating and Philadelphia happens to be toward the top of my list. I am not quite sure what the cost of living is like in Philly. How much can I expect to pay for a one bedroom apartment in the city, in a safer area? I've lived in the hood before and it is definitely not my cup of tea! I'm not looking for anything extravagant by any means either; Just your basic apartment. Here in Cleveland, $500-$600 could get you exactly what I'm looking for, just for comparison.

Top neighborhoods in and around Center City (downtown) 1 bedrooms generally range from $1500 on up. (deals can be found)

$500-$600 range you would have to look way further out from Center City in a lower quality neighborhood.

You can get a place for $700-800 in NE Philly or maybe NW philly. But that isn't really in the "city", as cpomp noted, it is more expensive. Philly is considerably more urban than Cleveland so you might really like a tiny place in manayunk/roxborough neighborhoods.

When I said in the city, I guess I just meant Philly proper; not necessarily downtown.

Yup, and even at that price you aren't going to get something all that great in Center City. Welcome to the Northeast. Of course cheaper deals are more plentiful outside Center City.

Tbh, there's very little that would be an average rental in Center City(downtown)nowadays. There are brand new rental buildings(more coming) and rehabbed units in older buildings.

Look a bit further away from downtown in S. Philly or University City. Both are essentially adjacent to Center City.

Yea I'm definitely open to any neighborhood in Philly as long as it is safe(ish). I already knew rent was going to be incredibly high downtown, just like it is in any larger city. What sort of rent do South Philly and University City typically demand for an average apartment?

Rentals in Philly are much higher than in Cleveland. Expect to pay twice what you are paying for probably less than you are getting, in terms of neighborhood.

That is a very helpful map! Thank you

Yea, I did expect the rent prices to be higher in Philly for sure. I wasn't expecting to waltz in and pay $600/month for an apartment in a "trendy" neighborhood. It looks like I can get an affordable place over in Camden!
