Why dont the Septa run all 24 hours??? I mean c'mon, Philly is a large dense northeastern city, its public transit should run full time. No sense in having Patco (serves Philly's NJ suburbs) running 24/7, while Septa (serves the actual city of Philadelphia) runs 6am-1am.

Does anybody know any efforts going on to improve this and have an all day transportation system?

DarkLoFan means why doesn't the subway service run 24 hours, which it doesn't, except on the weekends. This question has been brought up before. SEPTA stopped 24 hour subway service in 1991 mainly because of crime which i thought was shortsighted. I mean, they have had transit cops since the early-to-mid 80's....like, huh?!?

Subway systems that run 24/7 are not really the norm - in the Northeast or elsewhere on earth. I don't know why SEPTA always gets this criticism.
The list of cities on earth with full 24/7 subway service is a very short one. NYC & Berlin. I think that's it.

Track maintenance is another issue with 24 hour service. All those miles of track need to be inspected and repaired relatively frequently. That usually happens in the overnight hours when the system is shut down. The only cities with 24/7 service in the US are New York and Chicago. I believe there are only a few other cities in the world that do too. The subway runs 24 hours on weekends anyway, and that is good enough for me.

Considering the budget issues most public transit organizations have and the maintenance issues 24/7 service creates it's not surprising most cities don't have it. Plus the advent of Uber/Lyft has made it less of an issue.

Is there 24/7 bus service in Philly?

A lot of buses are 24/7 in the city, especially highly trafficked ones. The subway is replaced with 'Night Owl' buses on weekdays overnight and run on the exact same route the subway would.

Seems sufficient then - I know it can be inconvenient for some, but it's good enough for London. The NYC subway system would be in much better shape if it wasn't 24/7.
