Hi,

I'm not familiar with Philly's public transportation at all. I would like to take the subway from the south of the city (I will be driving up from I-95) to the marathon's start at the Museum of Art. What is the best way to do this? What subway station(s) have safe parking for my car? Thanks.

Any of the South Philly stations would be safe to park your car around (AT&T, Oregon, Snyder, Tasker-Morris, Ellsworth-Federal). You could take the Broad Street Line (orange line) northbound from any of those stations to Spring Garden or Race-Vine and just walk the rest of the way.

Or park along the regional rail line and take that to 30th St station. Go to Septa.org for map but if your coming from Delaware (state) you might want Newark line, just park in Ridley Park or somewhere like that. Or park along the Media line.

On a side note, all parking near the subway stations is on the street. So it may vary and you may have to drive a couple blocks before you find a spot.

Speaking as someone who has ran a couple of marathons, running a marathon is grueling. You need to be well rested and relaxed at the start. I would avoid the hustle by paying for parking as close to the marathon as possible. It may mean parking in the private garages near the start or taking a cab. It may be well worth it, if you can. And when you are done and exhausted, you will need to go back to where you left your car.

Additionally, as back up, plan another way of getting there because the city division of Septa may be on strike starting at midnight tonight.

Thanks to all for the suggestions; it's good to know that the area around the subways is relatively safe. I'll check out the rail line too; that's something I hadn't considered. I did debate driving directly into the city, but I'm afraid that traffic will be a nightmare with all the people plus road closures. And thanks for the warning on the strike- I had no idea that might happen, so I'll definitely keep an eye on that.

All the best in tomorrow's marathon. It's going to be windy and chilly. I've ran Marathon in windy rain and I still PR'd. The hardest part is usually getting through the training, just enjoy your run.
