I think people should be upset with Trader Joes for basically ignoring the city and not relieving that mess of a store on Market St.
Tbh, I don't see it happening either. I'm just hoping that they might, perhaps, see the folly of it. Why simply concede more upscale urban territory to Whole Foods?

Trader Joes is neglecting their Ardmore store too, btw.

It's all about trusted supply-chain-management and tested strategy. Plenty of suburban locations around the country to expand to before modifying the entire way they do business.

I agree about the urban quality of NC cities, in general. Still, it's a move in a direction. Add to that a site in Brooklyn, & you just might see some Wegmans show up in Philadelphia.

I suspect that Kroger may be thinking that Ahold Delhaize will go into & cover Philadelphia. They do urban full-service grocery stores in Europe.

There are some areas in Philadelphia where Wegmans could build a store with scaled back parking.

They are in-progress on construction to add an additional 4k sq. ft. to the Ardmore location to go from 8k sq ft to 12k. Also, a 600+ space parking garage is going up across the street (replacing a 200 space surface lot), which will hopefully help with some of the parking/traffic issues in the area including the Trader Joe's lot.

Has Lidl bought land near that Trader Joe's? That might have lit a fire under them.

Richmond has plenty of Krogers. Pretty much similar to Acme in quality. Maybe a tiny step down?

Trader Joe's likes being scarce. I always hated the parking lot at the Marlton store, so I used to go to the one off Concord Pike in northern Delaware.

As to Wegmans, take public transportation or rent a car & go to a suburban Wegmans once a month or so. Make sure that you have a card so that they know that you live in Philadelphia. Get other people in the city to do the same. If they see enough customers coming out of the city, they might look in the city.

Not sure, but I did see this on the Montgomery County website a few weeks ago...

Lidl, a European style grocery plans to open several stores in the county in the next few years.
Can't find anything more concrete, but did see plans to open Lidl's in Upper Providence and Warminster.

I haven't been in a Kroger for years. They did buy Harris Teeter, which is upscale & goes as far north as southern Delaware. Wegmans competes with Harris Teeter in the 95 corridor.

Harris Teeter & Publix are both in the most urban parts of Charlotte.

Ahold Delhaize is right there & could go into Philadelphia & build urban stores. Wegmans is there too. They could go into certain areas. Neither is doing that right now. As the population increases, the need for grocery stores & supermarkets will increase. Kroger is nearby with Harris Teeter. Publix is heading north. One of them could go into Philadelphia. Only time will tell.

Keep in mind that Aldi Nord is involved with Trader Joe's. Regular Aldi stores are Aldi Sued. All Aldis in Europe compete with Lidl.
