I'm moving back to Philadelphia to start a job in the University City area. I'd like to rent for a bit before buying, and I'm looking for a 2BR apartment/condo/home, with the caveat that I need covered parking (preferably a garage) for a toy. What would the most convenient place be for us to look for housing? I'd be fine commuting via public transportation, walking, or driving. I'd like to keep the budget around 3000 if possible.

Thanks!

You can get a VERY nice place in Ardmore, Wayne, etc. for 3k without having to worry about parking. Septa is awesome, and the commute to the city is painless. Lots of shopping/nightlife, and you definitely get the suburb space you need... if that's what you're looking for.

However, if you don't need the suburb space, I recommend the city - UCity Spruce Hill, Rittenhouse, Grad Hospital. I personally live in Rittenhouse, and you can certainly afford it within your budget.

I LOVE the accessibility of things... and not having to use my car. Parking can run you about $300/month for a garage space. I walk everywhere... also run - the city is great for runners/community/friends.

Will you have roommates? What's your timeline?
