Did you move to Phila? I am in Nor Cal. Looking to plant roots back on the east coast. I have had enough of the west, I am just not impressed.

I am a nurse looking at working at Temple or CHOP

I also tend to repeat myself here, but I'll also say here that Northwest Philadelphia, especially the neighborhoods to the north of Wissahickon Creek, is also worth considering.

(I live in one of those neighborhoods: Germantown, the most populous of the city's outlying neighborhoods, with some 65,000 inhabitants.)

Roxborough is the only one of the seven NW Philly neighborhoods to lack rail transit service completely. The other six all have at least one Regional Rail station within them, and Germantown, Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill have several.

You should also be able to find decent housing in your target price range in all of them except Chestnut Hill, the city's second-wealthiest neighborhood after Society Hill. And you might even be able to stumble across a nice home in your price range at the bottom of Chestnut Hill.

If you end up working in University City, East Falls and Manayunk are both unusually well situated; you could take Regional Rail to 30th Street Station or drive along the Martin Luther King (nee West River) Drive to Sweetbriar Drive, which takes you up to 34th Street, one of the main approaches to U-City's employment center from the north.

Philly's public schools have a bad rep, but I hear increasing chatter to the effect that they're not as bad as everyone says they are, especially at the elementary level. There are also charter schools (independently run public schools) and Catholic schools to choose from.

We've been out here for a couple of years and feel the same way. Weather is nice, but that doesn't make up for all of the negatives, IMHO.
No, we haven't moved yet, since I haven't been able to find a job in my field. We would't be able to move without me having a job first.
Maybe, you'll have better luck finding something in nursing?
