How could I forget joe familiar LOL. That's the term you use for somebody who is too buddy buddy too quickly; most times you shorten it an just call them joe. Sometimes used to describe someone who are genuinely friendly. Not a good term.

That's what's up- started in Philly and has been picked up in NY and other places- pretty much a term for positive approval.

Bul- used to describe another male.

Like somebody mentioned- young bul is used to describe those younger than you, but can also be a term of disrespect. Oldhead is used to describe those older than you, or act older than you and can be used as a term of respect.
Thas' wasup- I forgot to put that in my earlier post. Definitely a Philly thing. I never remember hearing that anywhere else. I now hear it in a lot of places, including the midwest. Although I believe Philly is the originator of the term, I have a hard time believing that Philly is responsible for the distribution of it. These things usually happen via media outlets and Philly does not have that large of a presence to rest of the country for something regional to be spread nationally. Otherwise, we might be seeing more grown men walking around with long beards, short pants, and pastel shirts- LOL!

Sheesh, I've lived in the suburbs of Philly all my life, and worked in Philly for years, and never heard "jawn"!

Some things I noticed:

If you live in a Philly row house you have a parlor (pronounced "pahler").
I live in the suburbs and always called it the living room.

You don't go "down to the basement" you go "down cellar."

If you are talking to anyone younger than you, even like 5 minutes younger than you, it's completely appropriate to call them "hon."

Outside of Philly, I heard Jay-Z use it first on In My Lifetime Volume III - Beans was starting to become a big name under him, so he probably picked it up there. Of course people are going to pick it up then.

Pastels and Capris on dudes is definitely Philly.

I buy this. Jay Z has a large enough fan base to make a term popular. unfortunately he will get credit for it even though it originates in the 215.

BTW- I may be wrong, but philly always reminds of the first place to reperesent itself based on it area code. I remember the roots album doing that years ago (before I even lived in Philly). "All the way live from the 215..."
