I have gotten the same vibe the last few times i went down the shore. I wouldn't go somewhere dry to drink.

All these GD rules and families overcrowding shore towns is precisely why I don't go often! I just want to sip a stiff cocktail on the beach without too much commotion or getting a fine. I'm thinking a quieter beach that's less known/visited is where I need to go.

For quieter beaches in NJ, I always liked Avalon.

This obviously isn't practicable for a day trip, but for future visits, you may want to Airbnb a room or small apartment and stay the night in a shore town with less of a resort-type presence. Fewer hotels means fewer vacationers cycling in and out over the course of the season, and fewer day-trippers, to boot.

A couple towns, like Margate and Longport, are 100% hotel free. There's still a summer crowd but the surge is much more manageable, especially in Longport. It's downright peaceful by the Point, even during peak season. Beach drinking isn't a huge thing there, but unless you drink from a brown paper bag or get belligerently drunk, no one should be any the wiser.

Sounds like you would like Sept and October. Great beach months lately. Great weather, no crowds, lifeguards or police to deal with.
